In the continuing spirit of experimentation and building community, ShivaNuts Unite! is hosting a Shiva Nata Bookclub.
The First Book
The first book is Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us by Daniel Pink.

“Most of us believe that the best way to motivate ourselves and others is with external rewards like money—the carrot-and-stick approach. That’s a mistake, Daniel H. Pink says in, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, his provocative and persuasive new book. The secret to high performance and satisfaction—at work, at school, and at home—is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.”
Selected by Kalyani, she writes:
“I found this book stunning in its relevance for Shiva Nata. So much so that I’m pondering how to make it like a basic part of Intro Shiva Nata classes. Seriously. It’s basically a long explanation of WHY you need Shiva Nata in your life – and WHY Shiva Nata feels so good. Even when it’s so hard. Stunning. (Oh, and it answered long- long- long-standing mysteries about why my career wasn’t working for me.)”
The Plan
By Monday, January 23, Kalyani will share her thoughts, responses, and questions to the first section of the book, “A New Operating System,” in a post, and discussion can take place in the comments. If you post your responses to the book on your blog, include a link in the comments. She’ll also host a Google+ Hangout on the afternoon of Saturday, January 28 to finish up the conversation “face-to-face.” Subsequent sections of the book will be discussed via blog and hangout in subsequent weeks.
So, if you want to participate, your next step is to borrow or purchase a copy. To find one near you, check Open Library. Paper, kindle or audio book doesn’t matter – we welcome all readers.
While you’re waiting for it to arrive, check out Pink’s TED talk on Motivation. Read, journal, ponder – and get ready for a stimulating conversation with fellow Shivanuts!
And, if you have suggestions for future books, leave them here in the comments.

I just put Drive on hold at the library. Can’t wait to read!
Heh – I bet the five copies available in Multnomah County are checked out to people who know one another. (I have it on hold, too.)
Yay!
I know the Portland libraries are amazing, do they offer audiobook/ebook downloads?
yes, yes they do.
(at least for the ebooks and hardcopy audiobooks – not sure about downloadable audiobooks… Casey?)
They don’t appear to offer downloadable audiobooks. That might be because it runs into some DRM/copyright issues?
I got my copy on the 11th and *just* started the book. Looks like I’m a bit behind…
Ooooh I got the book from the library today. Reading will commence. (also the flailing)
I posted my response to the first part here: http://dentintheworld.com/virtual-pompom-shaking/
Though I must say I found it rather harder to slog through the book than watch the little video.

Coming to the conversation a bit tardy, but just downloading the audiobook from audible right now. I’ll listen to the first section today. Looking forward to the discussion!
